Windmill Plank

animated character showing how to do a windmill plank core exercise.

This rotational core challenge combines plank stability with dynamic movement, building incredible core strength while improving your ability to rotate and reach in different directions.

HOW TO DO IT:

  • Start in a plank position with hands under shoulders
  • Lift one arm off the ground and rotate your body, reaching that arm toward the ceiling
  • Follow your hand with your eyes as you rotate
  • Your body should form a “T” shape at the top of the movement, with bottom hand directly under your shoulder
  • Rotate back down to the starting plank position with control
  • Keep your core tight & body straight throughout the entire movement
  • Repeat on other side
  • Continue alternating – left, right, left right…

MAKE IT COUNT:

  • Do as many as you can
  • If your shoulders give out before your core, add some Crunches

MAKE IT EASIER:

  • Perform the exercise on your knees and/or elbows instead
  • Don’t rotate as far – stop when comfortable
  • Move more slowly and focus on control

MAKE IT HARDER:

  • At the top of the rotation, drop your hip down, then lift it up
  • At the bottom of the rotation, reach under your body & tap the floor behind you
  • Add a light weight in the rotating hand

MAKE IT FUN:

  • Share this with a friend so you have a workout buddy!

PRACTICAL USES:

  • Better rotational strength for sports like golf, tennis, or baseball
  • Better balance while reaching across your body
  • Bucket brigades!
  • Stacking sandbags
  • Loading bales of hay
  • Playing Twister
